I am leading a committee to restore and position an A-10 at the McClellan Aviation Museum in Sacramento CA. The goal is to raise $150,000 to make it "Museum Quality" and help with other cost associated with building an aviation museum.

The museum has a web site http://www.mcclellanaviationmuseum.org/ and we have set up our own site for this project www.iqroseville.com/a-10.
(this site is still under construction. It should be fully up in the next couple of weeks)

We are at the front end of a 3 year project and I am looking for help in finding people who know about the A-10, have worked with it, and might be able to give us technical information as well as contact names of folks who may be interested in supporting the project.

I did not serve nor am I a pilot. I did love to watch the aircraft flying around from McClellan and Mather when I was growing up. My connection and fondness for the A-10 goes back to DS. My brother is a career army officer and back then he was with the 1st AD assigned to the 3rd ID. He wrote me a letter talking about how great it was to hear and then see a pair of A-10's fly over and a minute or so later black smoke would rise on the horizon. Some bad guys would not be a problem for him, or the men around him, anymore. A-10's made the world a bit safer for him and for that, I am filled with gratitude to those who kept them in the air, taking care of the men on the ground.

I want to be sure that the McClellan A-10 has a home for the future fitting such a great weapon.

Please email me at ray@aapplied.com if you would like to help.

ABOUT OUR McClellan A-10A ‘WARTHOG’:
USAF S/N 76-540 is an A-10A, one of a total of 713 A-10As built by Fairchild-Republic at Hagerstown, Maryland. It was delivered to the 354th Tactical Fighter Wing (TAC), Myrtle Beach AFB, South Carolina in 1978. In August, 1983 it was sent to the 706th TAC Fighter Squadron (AFRES), NAS New Orleans, Louisiana. During an Operation Desert Storm mission on January 31, 1991, the aircraft suffered major damage when struck by a surface-to-air missile. All hydraulic controls were lost, and the pilot, Major Jim Rose, managed to bring it home using backup systems. After repairs, it was flown to McClellan Air Logistics Center on August 22, 1991 to supply parts to other A-10s before being retired to the museum. Today, it represents the apex of dedicated close air support, anti-armor war fighting aviation technology and takes its place in the McClellan Aviation Museum collection as an excellent example of one of the most important combat aircraft in the USAF arsenal of the recent decades.

Let me pass your website around work. There are lots of people who work in the A-10 System Program Office who moved to Hill following McClellan's closure. Some are now retireing and moving back to the area and some know people still living in the Sacramento area who worked the A-10 for years. Maybe these people can "put the word out" on your project.

BTW the link for the A-10 section doesn't seen to be working.

Remember that all aircraft regardless of their age are owned by the official museum of the applicable service. Army, Navy, Air Force. The Air Force museum will be able to assist you in any areas that you need to be able to display your jet. If you have the room for it, especially if you have even a small hangar, the A-10 makes a better indoor display than an outdoor one. Also you can usually find assistance from other air museums that have same type of aircraft. In that case I know that deals are sometimes made also. If you have a part they need and they have one you need it can work out in everyones interest. The New England Air Museum has a nice A-10 from the Coonecticut Air Guard complete with CBU's and TER's.

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

Good luck a-10friend. You do a good job. Wish all the men/women the best with the project. I keep an eye on the site for the latest information. Let us (here on the forum) know when your website is finished.

Thanks to Dice-man, majormadmax, Hawg166, and Dutchy for the comments and support.

I am very "green" when it comes to this project and I am happy to take advice on what can be done to make the project successful. Please excuse my ignorance of protocol and language. A good example is a question for Hawg166. What is a CBU and a TER?

If anyone knows Major Jim Rose (at least he was a Major on this aircraft's last combat mission), or anyone who may have been a part of the ground crew I would really like to be able to add their names and comments to the web site. If they can get out to Sacramento, I'd like to put together some kind of ribbon cutting or opening day ceremony for this project.

I have not looked through all of the thousands of posts on this site and although these topics may have come up, I have a few questions:

How many A-10's are on display and where are they located?

How many A-10's have been lost in combat? Who, What, When, Where, and How. Is there a report?

Would you mind reposting or directing me to A-10 stories and could we post them on our web site?

We are trying to make a direct connection between men on the ground and the A-10. Does anyone have any pictures that have gournd troops in the foreground and the A-10 in the background?

Is there anyone in Sacramento or Northern California who has flown the A-10 or was a member of the ground crew. I would like to meet them and include them in our project.

Thanks

Wow lots of questions. A CBU is short for a cluster bomb or Cluster Bomb Unit. A TER is a triple ejection rank, the the rack you see holding three bombs on one station.

There are reports but you have to go through the AFs public affairs off to get them all.

I try to keep up on the A-10 in the news on my website at http://www.warthogpen.com You can also go to the AF website http://www.af.mil and type in A-10 thunderbolt II into the search engine and pull up a lot of stories.

You can do the same thing as above (AF website) in the photos section.
