Just curious, it came from a discussion on another forum.

Was napalm ever loaded on the A-10? Was it ever part of the loadout or whatever(can't recall the exact term) of weapons that can be loaded?

I don't think we had napalm anymore during the A-10s time. All the old nape cans were converted to the MXU-648 travel pod, so as far as I know, the Hog never carried nape, since I believe it was gone by then; though it has (and still does) carry the old nape canisters, now used as baggage containers.

BLU-27 is the designation for napalm. I don't ever recall it being loaded on the A-10, although it is certified to carry it. Nape sort lost its public appeal after the pictures of kids running naked out of the Vietnamese villages.

How does that saying go...

Gifted I never loaded BLU-27's however I did load BLU-52's in the load barn at Myrtle Beach. The BLU-52 used the same canister as the BLU-27. It had CS-2 type filler. The LSC guys always tried to get us by dropping a few drops of oil on the floor to see if the 3 man would catch it and stop the load for a leaking munition. Never loaded live ones though.

I was the Wing Chief Of Current Ops( Wing Scheduler) at Myrtle Beach when the first ops sq of A-10's was formed in 1977. Nape had gone the way of the buffalo by that time....for exactly the reasons described above. Started flying the hog in 1979 and flew it through 1992...there was NO napalm in the USAF inventory during that time. We carried it on A-7's at Myrtle probably as late as late 1976-early 1977. Lots of live fire drops at Ft Bragg with nape!

Col I think you miss understood what I was saying. I never said there was Napalm in the inventory at the time. What I said was I loaded BLU-52's in load training at MB. The BLU-52 carried a CS agent not napalm however it used the same cannister as napalm.

Cool. Only place I ever saw BLU-52 was in the -34 checklist and the 1M-34 description. Same with the CTU-2A air delivery canister.

Fender..I didn't misunderstand..and I wasn't "correcting" your reply. Just stating that by mid 1977 Napalm was politically NOT in the inventory of weapons the USAF employed....we had the cans....we just didn't have the NAPE for those who were interested!...Cheers All!
