So, who wants to change the subject?

Here's something I thought of awhile ago, and acted on yesterday:

There is a very fine AF 2Lt (former Army and AF enlisted guy) that I work with that has enormous potential to be a truly great officer. He's got all the qualities I insist a leader have, and I believe that with some molding and shaping and grooming by his chain of command, he can be one of the very best.

So I told 'em so today. This guy isn't in my cahin, and it's really none of my bidness, so I approached the subject with some tact and caution. But I went to see his supervisor (Navy LTCDR), who is also a first-rate man, and laid it out. He didn't resent my bringing it up at all (always thought the chance of that was low, but you never know), and he agrees with me. He went so far as to ask for my help in bringing this guy along, and wanted me to advise and watch, as I sit right next to him all day long. For his part, the LTCDR said he would dedicate time each week to mentor this guy, and would seek opportunities (schools, projects, extra duties and the like) to let this guy go as fast as he can.

I'm fairly proud of this, because I've never felt so strongly about the merits of any other officer as to stick my nose in what is really none of my affair. But my developmental guides explicitly state that one role of a senior NCO is to teach those junior officers how to lead, and to get 'em ready to assume greater responsibilities.

So here we go, and I hope I'm launching somebody on a trajectory that we can both be proud of.
