Class Dissection Of Live Dog Outrages Parents, Students
Student: 'It Just Makes Me Sick...'

POSTED: 8:12 am EDT May 12, 2005
UPDATED: 2:35 pm EDT May 12, 2005

A biology class lesson in Gunnison, Utah involving the dissection of a live dog has outraged some parents and students, according to a report.

"I thought that it would be just really a good experience if they could see the digestive system in the living animal," Biology teacher Doug Bierregaard said.

Biology teacher Doug Bjerregaard, who is a substitute teacher at Gunnison Valley High School, wanted his students to see how the digestive system of a dog worked.

Bjerregaard made arrangements for his students to be a part of a dissection of a dog that was still alive.

The dog was still alive, but the teacher said it was sedated before the dissection began.

With the students watching, the sedated dog's digestive system was removed.

"It just makes me sick and I don't think this should go on anywhere and nobody's learning from it," student Sierra Sears said.

The teacher said the lesson would allow students to see the organs actually working.

"I thought that it would be just really a good experience if they could see the digestive system in the living animal," Bierregaard said.

The school's principal, Kirk Anderson, said notifications went to parents explaining the dog was going to be euthanized and that the experiment would be done with the dog's organs still functioning.

The teacher is standing by his decision and calls it the ultimate educational experience.

Principal Anderson said he supports the lesson and it will be allowed to continue because the students are learning.

The dog used in the experiment was going to be euthanized despite the class project.

I think Mr. Bierregaard should be sedated and sent over to John Hopkins.

Dissect his brain and see if IT'S working. Sounds like something from 1943 Nazi Germany.

pj and other military medics get this type of training on trauma with vets supervision. It has a purpose then to save lives what the f**k was this teacher doing.

There has to be a cost versus benifit analysis for this stuff and I can see no logical reason for this training.

a sample of when this type of training has merit http://www.ingentaconnect.com/content/b ... 2/art00013
http://www.iifar.org/perspectives.html

The reason for this type of training is to teach the medic or doctor how to control bleeding and understand how to tie off living blood vessels. Because are not goog methods for simulating this for training purposes.

Sedated....just Sedated?????? God damn, don't let me ever get my hands on this wothless waste of space.

Most sedatives leave the animals still able to mildly feel what is going on, but just be too sleepy to care. This just isn't right!

Rascal there are time this can be justified when it is the only means available to train combat medics and surgeons. Even then it is done so infrequently that it is an exception the rule. These students never should have done this.

it's just an animal. also I think that we need to do more exciting dynamic things in learning and maybe the student would want to pay more attention. back when humans were first learning this stuff this is how they explored such topics, why not do the same starting off with our students. maybe something like this will get some student excited about studying medicine?

In Rutgers' Cook College, they have/had a cow that had a transparent plastic skin in one section in its body that showed agricultural students the whole digestive process of the bovine.

if you can justify this by saying its JUST an animal then the person doing the experiment is one too lets check his organs out for size.

This was on the news here in Utah the other night. Parents are up in arms over it. The dog was under a general anesthesia and was going to be euthanized afterwards. Most of the students found the whole thing distasteful as well.
