Hey all
i was at an air show at mcguire last weekend and i was talking to the hog driver about the new updates in the c model he told me that they are going to link the planes like the f-16 and f-15 (i forgot the actual name for this capability i apologize) but from what i understand one plane can target the area while another plane can actually deploy the munitions.

my first question is how does this work and what is the name of it.
does one plane keep a laser on the target or do they punch in the gps location or is it a combintion of both or other?

also can this be done through different a/c?
for example can an f-16 target the area and an a-10 fire a maverick at it or is only a link from one A-10C to another A-10C

thanks for your help

Okay, from one fairly newbie to another..there are no rules here, at least none that are written. There are, however, some unwritten ones. The first one is we don't ask about systems, especially new ones unless it's already in the public domain. Second rule..don't ask about capabilities and third, don't ask about tactics. These three topics are an area that shouldn't be talked about in a public forum.

The Air Force will, from time to time, release information about new systems, airframe upgrades and other stuff that shows your tax dollars at work. Those press releases are carefully worded and cleared at high levels for public consumption. There's nobody here that's going to give you any more information than what you can read anywhere else.

Dunno, I may be way off base here but I'm thinking I'm not.

Okay Apags, here's a couple of links for you.

This one has a short blurb on A-10 modernization and makes reference to your original question. It's only a paragraph about a quarter of the way down the page.

http://www.ngb.army.mil/features/posture/content/angtrans.htm

Not all the info on this one is accurate and some of it is really old but there's some good links on the right side of the page.

In 1999, the Navy and Airforce were involved in an airwar in Yugaslavia. Navy F-14s would acquire targets, and call in other aircraft to bomb them. The F-14s would point their laser designator at the target, and usually F/A-18s would drop laser guided munitions on it. I believe the F-14s simply relayed through an AWACS plane to get available aicraft in the area to bomb the targets.

I have seen on tv a computer layout of the battlefield where the pilot plots the position of a tank on the map, and all other pilots in the area can see the tank on their computers also.

thanks for that information suntracker that answered a big part of the question i had.

and thanks for the links old chief

if i may ask for more detail on what is said in one of the links i believe the paragraph you were referring to is this one

The A-10 demonstrated its continued relevance in today's battlefield as the Warthog was the dominant weapon when coalition forces raced for Baghdad during Operation Iraqi Freedom. Rapid integration and installation of the LITENING II laser targeting pod in only a few days and subsequent spectacular precision attacks served as a model for the future of the A-10. Several other limitations were identified to include the need to modernize the aircraft infrastructure through the Precision Engagement program. One particular limitation was the lack of a tactical data link. The leading candidate in the near-term is the Joint Tactical Radio System, with installation scheduled to begin in fiscal year 2005. During 2003, the A-10 modernization program experienced, increased emphasis including an aircraft modification to house the personal locator system, further research into an adequate engine replacement, continued testing of the AN/ALR 69 Radar Warning Receiver, continued COMET infrared countermeasures pod testing, continued acquisition of targeting pods for precision guided munitions, and further work for the Precision Engagement program to upgrade the aircraft avionics continued development and integration.

my question is did they start Precision Engagement program which they said would begin in 2005 or are they not going to go through with this program because of the planned update for the C model.

also does the Precision Engagment program include all the examples that they gave such as the RWR and engine update or did it just mean the update of the radio

thanks for all the help guys
and i apologive if the questions seem repetitive

PE is a separate program, independent of the "C" upgrade, and is going forward.

Don't know where the mixup is, but the PE mod is the A-10C model upgrade. There are plenty of articles out there on the net and in magazines if one wants to do the research. You're not going to get much more here than what is already pulicly released. Take it from someone who deals with the first two C-model aircraft daily.

Like Mugs said the PE program is what makes an A-10A into an A-10C. apags27, you might want to visit my A-10 site and look under the A-10C section...

Also do a few Google searchs using these key words for an update on oter programs going on with the Hawg....

The clock and some other displays currently in the A-model A-10. Nothing special or new.
