This was in Yahoo! news this morning: http://news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&u=/ap/20050719/ap_on_go_ca_st_pe/base_closings
Meat and Potatoes part of it, that matters to the A-10 world I found interesting....
<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>
The commission was slated to vote on whether to add to list for possible closure: Moody Air Force Base in Georgia; the Naval Master Jet Base Oceana in Virginia; and the Galena Airport Forward Operating Location in Alaska.

They also were voting on whether to consider shutting down, rather than simply scaling back forces as the
Pentagon proposed, at Pope Air Force Base in North Carolina, and Grand Forks Air Force Base in North Dakota. The Brunswick, Maine, Naval Air Station had been slated for downsizing but it now will be considered for closure, given the commission's vote.<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" size=2 id=quote>
Hmmm, They are considering ADDING Moody for closure, and CLOSING Pope, instead of realigning it. Well now where the hell would the A-10's go? I just thought this was interesting becuase if you read the whole brac report, each base intertwines with another, so much that it's all liek and episode of Seinfeld. Surely addign those two bases to the list would have to affect a half a dozen others, no?

More news,
<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>Before voting on additions, Chairman Anthony Principi cautioned that adding a base to the list "does not necessarily mean that the base will be realigned or closed" but will allow the panel to further analyze those bases' usefulness by visiting sites, collecting data and holding hearings.<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" size=2 id=quote>

and about Moody, I'm not sure what the heck this means, is Moody safe from closeure or realignment?

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>The panel also declined to add Moody Air Force Base in Georgia to the list.<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" size=2 id=quote>

And for our brother guard units came the following statement

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>Commissioners also have expressed serious reservations with the Pentagon's plan to disband or move dozens of Air National Guard units. However, that issue was not slated to be voted on Tuesday, and commissioners were working behind the scenes to determine what to do with that part of the proposal.<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" size=2 id=quote>

One thing I'm sure of no matter the outcome of this BRAC it will be one to remember...

Moody loses shot at mission

By Gene Rector

Telegraph Staff Writer

ROBINS AIR FORCE BASE - Moody Air Force Base in Valdosta apparently has lost its opportunity to gain a huge U.S. Navy flying mission, but supporters say the decision will create little disappointment in south Georgia and probably no additional missions or jobs for Robins Air Force Base.

During an afternoon session in Washington D.C., the nine-member BRAC 2005 commission, voted 7- 1 with one recusal to consider Naval Air Station Oceana, Va., for closure or realignment. But the same number of BRAC commissioners voted against recommending Moody as the bed-down location for the affected Navy units.

The move leaves the Defense Department's May 13 BRAC recommendations affecting Moody on the table. Those recommendations outlined a net gain of about 600 jobs and additional A-10 aircraft.

U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston, R-Ga., whose 1st District includes Moody, pointed out late Tuesday that the the area has a long association with the Air Force.

"Valdosta is an Air Force town. Part of their thinking is that it would be a good thing if the Navy moves in, but they would have to re-establish themselves in terms of contacts," he said. "They didn't want to lose all of that goodwill investment."

Bill Johnson, Kingston's chief of staff, said BRAC 2005 remains good news for Moody. "Today was all good news," said Johnson, who attended Tuesday's hearing. "Moody's issue was is it going to be 'safe Air Force' or 'safe Navy.'"

Ron Carbon, director of the 21st Century Partnership, attended the hearing. He said the decision gives the commission more latitude in deciding where the Oceana mission should go. The Partnership is a Middle Georgia group of political, business and civic leaders who have supported Robins Air Force Base during the base realignment and closure process.

"The commissioners also may recommend closing Oceana but leave it up to the Defense Department to identify where the forces are going," said Carbon. "I believe that's the way it will go. That would put the onus back on the Defense Department."

The commission is the only agency with the authority to add or delete specific installations from the Defense Department's list of 837 closure and realignment recommendations. The commission's final report is due to the president in September.

The Oceana force includes 190 F/A-18 and F-14 aircraft along with about 10,000 operational and support jobs. Carbon is not optimistic that Robins will be considered for part of that workload. "I wouldn't raise any hopes for that," he said. "Of course we're going to monitor it to see what is decided."

Retired Air Force Maj. Gen. Ron Smith, a consultant to the partnership, also believes Robins' chances are not good. "It would be a longshot for us to gain any of the Oceana operation," he said. "If they had decided to move the Oceana mission to Moody, we were hoping to gain some of the missions they would move out of Moody. But we are where we are. Something might fall out, but I haven't seen anything yet."

The Oceana and Moody issues were part of 12 new realignment and closure initiatives identified by the commission July 1. None directly involved Robins. The local base is programmed to gain 749 jobs under the Defense Department's BRAC plan.

Johnson also doesn't believe Robins will gain from the Oceana recommendation. "Robins is an unlikely recipient," he said. "Of course the good news for Robins is they're not on the closure list at all."

Webster defines "Frenzy" as 1. A period of wild excitement, often accompanied by manic activity 2. Temporary madness. I think the word fits.

A little more on the Oceana situation;

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>The Oceana jet base became a candidate for the list after the commission staff found that it was in an urban area and that congestion could inhibit its growth and mission.

Airplanes land or take off there every two and a half minutes, 24 hours a day, the panel was told.

"The Navy has a problem, a serious problem," said Commissioner Samuel K. Skinner, former transportation secretary, referring to the jet base.

one of the things I've read out here is that the Governors of some of the ANG Bases slated for closure are stepping up saying that the Governor has to sign off on closing the base as they report to the state and not the military.

MA,PA & DE's governors are all trying to find what they can do to stop Otis, Willow Grove and the PA unit from closing.

We had this conversation on another thread. On one hand its very true that the governnment doesnt owe anyone a job. If you unit is just plain bad or innefficient you deserve to be shut down. Lets face it you look at some of the ORE ORI reports, and there are some units that deserve to be shutdown. After Gulf war I and the OIF there is no reason and noexcuse for a unit to go and really kick ass, and do a great job then fail an ORE or an ORI for stupid reasons. If you can play the big game in the desert you had really oughtto be able to play a game for a week in backyard USA. I know a lot of it is local politics too. On the other hand I hate to see freinds get put out of work or realigned. Thats tough. There are some great guys and gals that I have met from the other units. And to be honest we the people of the A10 community need to stick together. In the end I think the guy in the big white house and his pals are just going to do what they want.

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

Wow Dude!
Why are you guys loosing your Hogs? We are kind've in your boat too! The BRAC Commission decided to keep us open and let the state decide what to do with the aircraft (some are yours). We were concidered by the commission as the "#1 rated A-10 Base in the Air Guard" and we are still in limbo with our hogs.

Hawg166, I doubt you can say but has anyone else heard if Barnes is big enough for both their current A-10 fleet and then the 18 planes from Otis's F-15s?

I would hate to see the Hog leave in favor for the Eagle. I get to see them alot here at Pease yet the Eagles never showed up. Any chance of the Hogs just moving over to Westover and then the Eagles going to Barnes or maybe even the other way around?

I cant because I dont know how to say it but Barnes COULD be large enough for both. However it wont be. If it happens we would realign. Im so freakin tired after the show I cant even think about it.

I dont want F15's. I like the A10. I came from high maintenance airframes so I know how spoiled I am in the A10. To be honest I never thought I could get attached as it were to an airframe. I certainly never thought that I could assimilate into a unit of attack pukes when I got out of F14's. I twas hard getting into the mindset of going from FITWING 1 to the 104th FW. But I love being in an Air Force MATWING unit. I dont ever want to go back t air to air.

Hawg166,

I'm hoping that against all odds the 104th does get to keep their Hogs! It would be a great loss for the A-10 community to have the 103rd, 104th, 111th, and 110th all disbanded after their records, particularly after their actions in the last four years!

Fight the good fight, and I hope that it does work out in the end.

Just checking a few BARC related sties and came across a couple of interesting items which I didn’t know, maybe you’ve heard about them.

On the BRAC site (http://www.defenselink.mil/news/Aug2005 ... _2563.html)
it lists changes made in recommendations made on Aug 29th and it makes this statement at the bottom of the page…

<b>Block the move of active-component combat aircraft from Eielson Air Force Base, Alaska</b>

Does this mean the A-10s are staying at Eielson?

Also found this news story….

http://www.nwanews.com/story.php?paper= ... yid=126350

Which A-10s are moving to Fort Smith Arkansas?? I’ve lost the bubble on BRAC…..

You're not the only one that's lost the bubble Dice, it's pretty hosed up at the moment. The commission didn't un-do a lot of what's in the DoD recommendations. As it stands right now, Bradley still gets the TF-34 CIRF (why?, there's no A-10's left in the Northeast) and the alert facility will still be built even though there's now going to be F-15's 12 air miles from BDL. Seven states have sued to block this and the hearing is Wednesday, the day before the whole mess has to go to the President. I don't see the courts deciding the issue in the time alloted. As I said in a post on another thread, I think Rummy will recommend the President not sign it until all this is worked out..but hey, I haven't been right about a flippin thing with BRAC yet..

If BRAC goes as currently planned, we'll lose 40% of the A-10 combat experience. Bad plan.

Please elaborate, Coach. Wouldn't/couldn't the pilots move with the aircraft?

If I'm not mistaken, pilots are assigned to the unit, not the aircraft. So if the unit swaps airframes, the pilots re-qual accordingly.

Not in the Guard. The pilots and maintainers are state employees. The jets leave, the people stay unless they can get hired by a new unit.

If Barnes gets Eagles, they either get hired flying/fixing Eagles or they go job hunting.

I was thinking that the A-10 community would lose a lot of combat experience...I don't see how that makes any sense at all.

About how long would it take to requal the pilots of one airframe on another (i.e. F-16 to A-10 if Ft. Smith scenario occurs, or A-10 to F-15 if the 104th gets Eagles)? Couldn't that lead to a loss of air power for a certain period of time?
