Yojimbo reminded me on SIMHQ that you used to work on these prior to the Hog. This is the Collins Foundation F-4, it's been parked at Pease for about a month hitting a few local airshows. My friend who manages the FBO which has the military fuel contracts drove me over before she headed out last Saturday for a quick flyover up in Stowe Vt

Thanks for letting me know the model, my father in law worked on these back in the day and was trying to explain to me how to tell but I still don't know.

I thought it was odd that it didn't smoke on the final approach like you normally see from F-4s, could they have modified the engines so they no longer do that?

Nice shots TG, must have been loud when the Phantom when over your head that low. Thanks for the offer but, I worked the F-4E/Gs and not this model.

All the phantoms were upgraded to "low smoke" engine in the mid to late 80s. The engines had updated burnner-cans and fuel spray nozzels which allowed the J-79s to burn fuel better and reduced the smoke they produced.

C or D looked pretty much the same I thought the "D'S" were navy versions?
We know for sure it isnt E,G or Recky.

according to the scramble website it's a D as well. I tried to upload the picture to Jetnet and that's what the serial number came up with.

Most of the "D's" are externally identical to the "C's". Biggest difference was the change in the radar from the dreaded APQ-100 to the APQ-109 though some had the APA-157. The "D" could also carry a specific type of weapon, one that required a "two man concept". As for the "smokeless" (they weren't but they were a whole bunch better than the dash 15's) engines, the "D" originally had the J79-15's but I believe the -17's could be retrofitted without any change to the airframe.
