I think any dates are in the very fine print of one of the Appendices. For ex: Grand Forks has until 2010 to change from a tanker base to a UAV base.

Most of the A-10 stuff doesn't happen until 2009 or 2010. Pope moves to Moody in 2007.

FOX NEWS
Thursday, September 15, 2005

WASHINGTON — President Bush on Thursday endorsed a plan for closing 22 major military bases and reconfiguring 33 others, leaving their fate to Congress.

Bush had until Sept. 23 to either accept the entire report from an independent commission and send it to Congress, or return it to the commission for further work.

The report will become final in 45 days unless Congress acts to reject it in full. In previous rounds, lawmakers never have rejected reports, meaning communities probably have little hope of a reprieve for their bases.

Bush had said that for the process to be "nonpolitical" the commission's decision would have to stand. He got the report last Friday from the nine-member Defense Base Closure and Realignment Commission (search).

Bush's submission of the report comes as his administration and Congress are preoccupied with aiding the hurricane-ravaged Gulf Coast and addressing other priorities. A GOP-led effort in the Senate to derail the base-closing process, which Republican leaders feared could embarrass them, has fizzled.

The commission said its recommendations would mean annual savings of $4.2 billion, compared with $5.4 billion under the plan it received in May from Defense Secretary Donald H. Rumsfeld (search). Rumsfeld had recommended closing 33 major bases and realigning 29 others.

The commission largely endorsed Rumsfeld's vision to restructure the domestic network of military bases to save billions of dollars over the next two decades and streamline the Army, Navy and Air Force.

But commissioners did recommend keeping open several major bases against the Pentagon's wishes, including a shipyard in Kittery, Maine, a submarine base in Groton, Conn., and Air Force bases in South Dakota and New Mexico.

The commission denied politics played a role in any decisions, even as it voted to keep open bases in the home states of Sen. John Thune (search), R-S.D., and other senators leading the opposition. That all but eliminated the possibility of congressional intervention.

In the House, the vast majority of members overwhelmingly support this round of closures and consolidations, which are the first in a decade.

Thune praised Bush for approving the report, which included a reprieve for Ellsworth Air Force Base in South Dakota. The pentagon sought to shutter the base that is home to half of the nation's B1-B bombers.

"Although I still believe we should not be closing U.S. military facilities while at war, I commend the BRAC commission for taking an independent and objective approach to this process," Thune said.

Military analysts have said that this may be the last chance the White House and Pentagon have to save money by shuttering bases. Congress probably will resist approving an additional round of closures, analysts say, given the large amount of heartache lawmakers experienced.

Congress reluctantly authorized this round of closures only after the White House threatened to veto an entire defense bill if it did not give the Pentagon the go-ahead.

And New Orleans had a viable evacuation plan, too.

Hi all,

Was trying to find any updated information about the 103rd and 104th, and came across the first few sentences of an article:

"The base closing commission submitted its recommendations to the White House on Thursday night after withdrawing proposed changes at an Air National Guard base in Connecticut."

It had a date of September 14th, but the link was broken. Is the "withdrawing" of "proposed changes" of any significance?

I just wanted to say that we in Ft Smith are very excited about getting A-10's. Losing the viper is bittersweet but the Hogs are such a awesome aircraft and the perfect mission for us. We promise to keep a superb tradition going with the A-10's flying as Flying Razorbacks.

I'm not trying to be a dick there guy, but eh my airplane doesnt take kindly to being called a pig. The 'ol girl likes her belly rubbed and a pat on the ass as she is taxiing out of the spot. Remember that because she will be yours soon enough.

LMAO..Don't mind Hawg166 HawgWild, he's a little possesive of his girl. Hell, if he had his way, there'd be personal interviews and in-depth FBI background checks of the prospective crewchief. Welcome to the forum, there's a lot of good stuff here and a lot of great people with a wealth of knowledge. Don't be afraid to ask questions but if you get stoopid, you'll get Sniped.

And if you personally get 166, you'll want to talk with Goose. Welcome!

Welcome Hawgwild,

Billy is right,166 needs to be treated like a Fine Lady,2 WARS,
impressive Kill record and all around Fine aircraft.
You never call her a "Hog" you call her "Girl or Lady" or she'll make you pay with more code 3's than a NewYork police station.

If I'm not mistaken though Grissom AFB IN was home to the
"RazorBacks" in their day. Everything had a Red Razor back Hawg painted on it.

She's a Great Jet,I hope whoever gets her treats her like the Lady she is.

Or Billy and Me will come a calling,My Father-in-law lives down the road from there, We'll go fishing.

Yeah Goose I noticed that about the hawg , and maybe Dice can shed a little light on that hawg from Arkansas. It looks like the same hawg that was on the nose of a P51D called "Ridge Runner" back in WW II. I wonder if the guy that flew that airplane was from Arkansas and maybe the ANG picked it up after the war.

Grissom was known as the "Hoosier Hogs" not the Razorbacks but, the Hog mascot used (patches ECT) looked a lot (in some cases) like ones used by the razorbacks. I believe this will be the first true razorback A-10 unit and I think the Razorback mascot will fit right-in with the A-10 Hawg!

Oh no doubt Dice I would really hope that history aside, someone would take a jet that has no door art and re-create "Ridge Runner" on an A-10. It would be a perfect memorial door IMHO.

Below is our 188th FW website that shows the tail flashing for our 16's. I'm sure it will be added on the A-10's once we get them.
Being called a pig or hog around here is a good thing, comes with the territory. Even our flights here are called Hawg or Tusk.

Another ? How do I add pictures and avatars?
Thanks

The P-51 'Ridge Runner' was flown by Pierce W McKennon from the famous 4th FG at Debden, Essex in WWII.
'Mac' came from Fort Smith, Arkansas.

That is way cool! I'll ask our Wing/CC and see what he thinks about doing a Ridge Runner II. He is pretty much up on things like that.

My mistake <img src=icon_smile_blush.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=icon_smile_dissapprove.gif border=0 align=middle> Your right Dice they were the Hoosier Hogs,
but they did use that red razor back stencil.

But we have to remember too the first P-47'S Thunderbolt's before they got the "BUBBLE" canopy were called "RazorBack" P-47's .

HawgWild, this site works well;
http://imageshack.us/

After you upload the picture(s), copy the "forum" link, open a new message and select "insert hyperlink" from the top menu. Paste the link, post the message. Sounds complicated but it's not..just don't give us lawndart images, not a lot of interest in them.
