I was under the impression that higher speed airframes built up enough energy during high speed flight to raise skin temps above freezing levels.

By this time tomorrow I shall have gained either a pearage or Westminster Abbey........Nelson

Regarding the N/AW A-10's turning ability as compared to the A-10A: I beleive I've read that FRC over-engineered the vertical stabilizers and made them too tall. There was concern that the added mass and "windage" of the added cockpit and fairing would adversely affect directional stability, so the vertical stabilizers were elongated 20". The thinking later was that much less was needed, about 6"-8", which would have reduced whatever deficiency in turning ability to minimal compared to the A-10A.

There is an excellent article in the December issue of Air Power magazine about the two seat A-10. They make a comment in the article that I'll throw out to muddy the water. The N/AW and the A-10B were two different airplanes. When N/AW didn't sell, Fairchild tried to sell a stripped down version as a trainer that they called the A-10B.

Well, if it is $ they need for the 2seater, here's an idea. Build one. send it around with the demo teams and sell tickets for a ride in the back seat. I'm betting people would fork over some good bucks for that oportunity. Heck, I'd sell my house!! <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>
It could happen!! <img src=newicons/anim_lol.gif border=0 align=middle>

When the General in charge of requirements asked me how big a plug we had to put in the fuselage to make it a two seater, I said none. All we do is change the canopy, add a seat, and move the avionics to bays forward of the tail.

I am Spartacus!

Yeah yeah, I guess you get alot of scammers and wannabe A-10 teenagers on this forum. So, to put your mind at ease, I just opened my can of woop ass as my grandson says.

Have a peek at my N/AW A-10 model NEW IN BOX.
<img src="http://www.dynamicbear.com/nibNAW.JPG" border=0>
I just opened it for the third time in about 30 years. And this is the first time I ever took it out of the box.
<img src="http://www.dynamicbear.com/NAW.JPG" border=0>
How many of these do you figure I've got?
<img src="http://www.dynamicbear.com/stand.JPG" border=0>
The one with the interchangeable canopy is packed in a crate in the attic, I probably won't get around to unpacking until after I move in March.

Need any more proof I'm Spartacus? Look, I don't even vacuum the damn carpet before I take pictures!

The jist of the reasons they didn't buy the two seater is:

1. Because they didn't have the money from congress. Other politicians were fighting for dollars for their defense contractors. There was no money to buy the single seat A-10 until I killed the Cheyenne helicopter, I found out about their rotor blade problems at speed. The real Warthog:http://www.internetage.com/cartercopters/pics9.htm
I talked to one of the old Lockheed guys just before Thanksgiving. When I mentioned killing that helicopter to fund the A-10 he got pissed. It was his program and he got canned.

2. Every time we wanted to do something special to make the A-10 better, somebody would pipe up with the catch phrase of the day "fly-off". Meaning we'd have to compete with whatever weapon system they thought could do the job cheaper and better. And we won every fly-off so they would change the subject when the data came in.

3. We had a bunch of paper pushers and bean counters in the Pentagon chasing skirts rather than pilots who'd been in combat getting their ass shot off like me.

4. It was alot safer for your career to go along with the "Program" letting the Army buy attack helicopters for ground support while the Air Force concentrated on Air to Air and Strategic carpet bombing.

It was like pushing a square wheel uphill all day.

How much you figure it's worth on eBay? Maybe I could sell the original PR materials and corporate paperwork with it.

How much is a brand new T-46 model worth?

Not to hijack this thread, but we had some real problems with pilots flying the A-10 into the ground. We tried to sell the two seater as a "Combat Ready Trainer" to save lives. Essentially the first time you fly an A-10 you're solo with a chase instructor. Even the most experienced A-10 pilots were having close calls or killing themselves.

So when we couldn't sell the two seater, we came up with GCAS. Or for you wannabes, Ground Collision Avoidance System. No other aircraft of the time had this, because they didn't need it. Those guys would rather fly high, clean and fast, than slow and dirty.

I could go into details, but it's late, and we can start another discussion on that subject.

When I was at Langley, I got an A-10 tie from this old guy named Joel who used to come around the office. He was called Mr. A-10 back then.
He had the desk display with the 2 seat replaceable nose.
Never mentioned Sparticus.

GCAS didn't come around till LASTE which was almost 10 years after the A-10 was built. A lot of pilots went through the school house by then.
BTW the color choice was blue or brown...but I guess you would have known that.

I never had the chance to meet MrA-10 .I did meet
Mr JetStar (C-140A&B)in 1982 for one of his few yearly classes.
Still have my Offical Lockhead JetStar hat around here somewhere.

The Saberliner folks from Rockwell (T-39'S) never came around .

There were never any brown ties.

Just so you know who that "old guy" named Joel is, maybe you recognize this?
