The comments about harpoons being so heavy brings up another point. The A-10 is limited to the amount of Mavs it can carry when used with other weapons. I've heard rumors that the idea of putting hellfire missiles onto the A-10 (especially the A-10C) is being entertained. The reasoning is the cost of the Maverick and the fact that we never use anywhere near the full kinematic capabilities of it. We are always limited by the seeker and the requirements for a good lock (ie. we usually have to press far inside the max range of the missile just to lock up a tactical sized vehicle). With the hellfire, you could carry a load of 18+ of these badboys and still have an outstanding tank killing weapon. They are cheaper, weigh less, and have comparable tracking capability. Obviously it won't have the same 150 lb or 300 lb shaped charge of the Mav, but that's probably alright for most of the targets we're shooting at these days.
Attack!!!

Yeah but can you fire a hellfire through the windshield of a Chevy Suburban with 9 guys in it and make the doors fly off like flower pedals in the breeze ?

Actually yes, They Blow Turrets off!

the Hellfire has a Limited FOV and is why when we put them on the Pred B we had to modify the Rail MOA. And provide a window of WEZ for the Pilots operating it.

(Yes I will pat myself on the back for this one)

the HEllfire is vastly superior to any Maverick Series, Minus the range issue.

The new Radar Hellfires, can track a vehicle at an oblique angle without Target Eclipsing and Building clutter blocking it, It has a true INS and Internal Radar Guidance System.

Hellfire would not be a good option for an a10 as it is a Fixed Employment window, this is not good for a manuevering fighter, but works great for Helicopters.

I thik a harpoon on an A10 would rock. But they are freain' big. I dont think it would fit.

Hornets Employ them why not an A10...simple

you would first need a method of finding the target 60+ NM (radar) New IR pods Get Close But not well enough for a sorting and track mechanism at that distance. (unless vectored to a good Location or GPS Point) then you need to program the missle Via Avionics. (seeker Radar Width, Flight Profile, and Attack Profile of the missile, then Self Destruct Distance)

The Exocet was one weapon being looked at for the two-seat A-10...

I didnt realize the Harpoon has a 60+ NM range. Thats a good clip of water. Mudd from a pilots point of view taking into account the whole new litoral warfare idea, would a coastal patro version of the A-10 be a foolish idea ?

Flying low and slow is good for air support, but shooting missiles at ships, which are pretty much floating missile platforms, I don't think works. I need some correction from a pilot, but you'd either want to fly in low, pop up long enough to lock, or come in high, and shoot the missile at the longer range, to keep out of SAM territory. I don't think the hawg would be good for much beyond taking care of really small ships near land. Keep away from the destroyers, and then you also don't really need the really big missiles, Mavericks will do the job fine.

Ignorance may be bliss, but it sure ain't fun!

Well I dont think we want to find out about the Ship attacking, The FAST MOVERS will have a hard enough time, because if we got into a shooting war with a Country with a "REAL NAVY" not little boats it would be probably the PRC
