Today I visit the Open House at Spangdahlem. Little static and just a flyby of a F-16 and twice by the A-10 was it a succes. Dice-Man, Spangdahlem has a new doorart, the first of the rest, I send you this week a picture.

Got the images but, I'm sorry to say this is not new art Dutchy. 30mm posted a shot of this door a while back but, I do want to say thanks for thinking of me and my art collection while you're out photoing hawgs!

Dutchy, I don’t know what happen but, this is the original image posted (and sent to me) by 30MM. As you can see it’s the same image (door art) as the one you took and from the same Spang jet. I guess not all door art was removed when the “order” was given to remove it or, the image was reproduced with amazing accuracy .

Funny that they keep the doorart. But it is for Spangdahlem a good start to bring the tradition back. Hopely the squadron made also own doorarts for the variation. Hopely I see more and I let you know it what I see with pictures.
Where did the plane first flew before it came to Spangdahlem? That is for me to get a little history behind the plane/doorart.

81-0966 flew with the 81st out of Bentwarters UK from 1982-1993 when it was moved to Spang. Thanks for keeping an eye out for art Dutchy.

I crewed 81-0966 my entire AF career (not all that long of one). While I was at Spang, from 94 - 98, she didn't have any door art at all.

Dice, an old timer told me once that 966 was called "The Bean-Grazer" while it was at Bentwaters. Apparently it IFE'D in because of an Engine Failure and while landing the pilot forgot to pull the emergency brake handle, and the aircraft left the runway, and ran into a field of beans. I was told that a section of sections of the wing had to be replaced as well as some major main gear repair. Ever heard anything about that?

Chief966, that was before my time on the A-10 but, it wouldn't be the first jet to take a "spin" in fields, golf courses, and swamps. <img src=newicons/anim_shock.gif border=0 align=middle><img src=newicons/anim_lol.gif border=0 align=middle>

I guess that would make me an old-timer since I was in the squadron when that accident happened. A lot of creative accounting kept it from being a Class-A.

So the doorart was in history at that plane and later put it again on that plane. That explains why the airmen told me that it was new (for them and others and me). But I did not see mine picture anymore in this topic.

Thanks for helping me guys. Next weekend I go to Duxford, there is an airshow with old WW2 planes there. When I have time I will visit the museum (USAFE stuff in there, maybe with Bentwaters A-10).

i would have come but there's an airshow much closer to home @ Yeovilton, no Hawgs, but a good selection of aircraft <img src=icon_smile.gif border=0 align=middle>

Dutchy

The plane hanging at Duxford as Alconbury ('AR') markings on it, it is 77-0259. It is in the American Air Museum at the Imperial War Museum at Duxford. It, along with 80-0219 (the 10 TFW "Phoenix" bird, which sits static display at Alconbury) are the only two Hawgs left in the UK that I know of...

By the way, I wonder if the door art in question was "hidden" somewhere during the Dark Ages of Doc?

Alconbury is also good. Years ago I saw Bentwaters Hawgs in the Netherlands at an airshow on static. But first things first at Duxford, to see the old warplanes flying.

Heres some current spang info for ya <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

acft 966 recently came back from slep. It was there for a good amount of time and the door art was from one of its trips downrange. The jet went to slep after that deployment so the door art was never removed. At the moment it has been approved to start doing door art on the jets, but it must be approved before being applied. Also the famous rat heads on the nacelles are in works for making a comeback due to a change in USAFE command. <img src=icon_smile_wink.gif border=0 align=middle>

Ronin, thanks for the info I hadn't thought about a jet being in SLEP.

I don't have a good contact at Spang do you hang-out here much? I would really like to see (and get images of) the new doors as they are painted.
