I was watching an A-10 flight team demo vid the other day and the announcer said that the A-10 could turn a 360 degree circle INSIDE texas stadium(700 foot circumferance).

I've seen charts that show a 950ish foot 360 degree turn radius @5000 feet, 300kts, and with six mk82s. So my question is, is the Texas stadium claim possible with a clean(or stripped) Hog under ideal conditions? Or is this just unwarranted machismo on the part of the flight show announcer(who was presumably part of the A-10 demo team)

Thanx fellas.

my bible says 170kts 6xmk82's @ weight of 31,000lb @ 5,000' flaps @ 20deg = just around 1K' radius sustained slightly less instantaneous

My experience tells me that with 6xMk84s and 31,000lb gross weight, you are either missing significant parts of your jet or really low on gas. Even so, at 170 KIAS, there will be no difference between sustained and instantaneous, you will be losing energy before you reach the C(sub)L. You are below sustained turn, so if you do anything, you either slow down or lose altitude.

For a standard demo configuration at or above about 310 KIAS, you can figure turn radius will be about 1300 feet.

OK, thanx a lot Coach.

So i can take it the figure the guy in the vid and i guess the chart were talking about was the instantaneous rate? Or is it just some meaningless theoretical figure that has no basis in useful reality?

Here's that chart Coach, the figure did mention 20% flaps(whatever that means, lol)...

Sustained turn radius at 1500 meters/5000 feet with 6 mk82s

No flaps

* 200KIAS 398 meter/1305 feet
* 250KIAS 568 meter/1864 feet
* 300KIAS 792 meter/2598 feet

20 degree flaps

* 130KIAS 306 meter/1003 feet
* 150KIAS 296 meter/972 feet
* 170KIAS 358 meter/1176 feet

This is no attempt to contradict you, i'm posting it in case i'm misinterpreting it somehow.

You know us grunt types...anything more than a six digit grid and i'm confuzed.

At any rate, i appreciate your assistance.

I dont know where those numbers come from, but I would question all of them. A sustained turn with that load would be no more than about 2.1 "g"s at best. Hardly good enough for those type numbers.

At 130 KIAS with 6xMk 82s, you are barely able to fly, turning in a 1003ft turn radius is would be impossible.
