Feds: Man planned to blow up Ill. mall

CHICAGO - A Muslim convert who talked about his desire to wage jihad against civilians was charged Friday in a plot to set off hand grenades at a shopping mall at the height of the Christmas rush, authorities said.

Investigators said Derrick Shareef, 22, an American citizen from Rockford, was acting alone and never actually obtained any grenades. He was arrested Wednesday when he met with an undercover agent in a parking lot to trade a set of stereo speakers for four hand grenades and a gun, authorities said.

"He fixed on a day of December 22nd on Friday ... because it was the Friday before Christmas and thought that would be the highest concentration of shoppers that he could kill and injure," said Robert Grant, the agent in charge of the Chicago
FBI office.

Authorities said Shareef had been under investigation since September, when he told an acquaintance that "he wanted to commit acts of violent jihad against targets in the United States as well as commit other crimes."

The acquaintance immediately informed the FBI, officials said.

Federal officials said Shareef planned to set off four hand grenades in garbage cans at the CherryVale shopping mall in Rockford, about 90 miles northwest of Chicago.

Other potential targets that Shareef allegedly discussed included government facilities such as courthouses and city hall, authorities said.

An affidavit quoted him as saying: "I just want to smoke a judge."

Shareef was born in the United States and converted to Islam, officials said. They believe he might have learned about jihad through videos and Web sites.

"While these are very serious charges, at no time was the public in any imminent peril," U.S. Attorney Patrick J. Fitzgerald said in a statement.

Shareef appeared briefly before a judge Friday and was ordered held without bond. He was charged with one count of attempting to damage or destroy a building by fire or explosion and one count of attempting to use a weapon of mass destruction.

Defense attorney Michael B. Mann declined to comment on the charges.

Shareef and his acquaintance cased the mall on Nov. 30, discussing the layout and spots where they might set off several grenades simultaneously to create more pandemonium, according to an FBI affidavit.

A spokeswoman for the mall said officials were cooperating with the investigation but referred all other questions to the U.S. attorney's office.

The muslim women are setting us back thousands of years with their costumes and their ways. If not more. I see the proud look of the men, when walking with one. They look very proud.

Well time to get Beat-up I guess,
Muslims are pretty much Peaceful ,just like all the other Religions but you take a few FAR RIGHT OR LEFT parts of any belief their the ones that cause the trouble.
We have Groups in this country that arent Muslim but just as Dangerous, remember the OKCity bombing? Timmy wasnt a Muslim far from it.

The Founding Fathers wanted this country to have Freedom of Religion for all.
If their peaceful no matter their beliefs then I havent any problems with them.If they use their belief for Hate or War we got a problem.
I dont have to agree with their beliefs but I can respect it.

Hardly peaceful to me. The ones who are peaceful are either not TRUE Muslims (following their bible to the T) or just waiting for the word to come out from their leader and take everybody by surprise by going postal. And that means going postal on YOU, if you are not Muslim.

This may not make me any friends so I'm ready to be burned and bashed....but...but there are millions of Christians or any other religion that are anything but peaceful as well....every religion has it's fanatics....The media and Americans (myself included) have made Muslims the new Communists...it's the Cold War (but not so cold) of the 21st Century...just like it was good vs evil (NATO Vs Warsaw Pact) not it's just Christians Vs Muslims....

Did you read back the whole thread Snipe? It was pretty well covered and by yourself plus a few others the basic idea on the way things are.
But you forgot to put the Jewish Folks in there too, they've been at odds with them for a long time.
But like was said most religions are peaceful but there are those within those groups who take bits and pieces of the word and twist it to fit their own beliefs and get a few \"WaCKO'S\" to join in and thats how it starts.

Iraq anymore isn't \"Muslims vs Christians\" its more the Tribes of the Arab and Persians and how they believe thats causing a \"sectoral war \" that were caught in.
The Sunni's now are fighting AL-Queda we should back them up, Shiites are bent on revenge for the time under the Saddam rule, So theirs about 3 wars going on all at once and No matter HOW MANY TIMES THE PRES OR VP SAY IT, IF WE PULL OUT THEIR NOT GOING TO FOLLOW US HOME, no more than the would if we won over there,

Well thats a \"GOOD POINT\" but most religions say \"If you don't believe Our way your going to \"Hell\" or \"Our God is Better than Your God\" etc.......

But remember too during the 1000 years Christians did the same thing to the Jews and if they didn't covert they were killed,the Crusades another one of our \"Darkest times\" so but we learned from our mistakes \"To a point\" not saying we're prefect .

The whole thing is \"You go into a Muslim country \" you can't treat it like its a \"Christian Country\" and some of you remember going over to the
\"Sandbox\" in 90-91 they didn't want us wearing \"Crosses, they Camouflaged the Bible covers,and when they would on Sunday tell you it was time for Church they called it \"A Morale Meeting \" never Church services.
Plus the \"Hobiee\" Guards would pass out Islam tracts to you at the gate and you had to take them under the Commanders orders and then you could throw it away but NEVER IN FRONT OF A SAUDI .
Plus those \"Culture \" cards that had the 150 things you couldn't do that would insult an Arab or Muslim .

And only 1 person I ever met could do the top 20 things in a row as a Greeting and that was Scotty Trell Msgt use to Bust us out Laughing when he did that. He just FLAT-OUT HATED THEM, because he had worked with them before somewhere .

I do see your point, but the crusades, etc. were people doing wrong things in Christianity's name, wrong according to the Christian Bible.
So of course you get people in any religion that \"go bad\", but if it is in your bible to actually kill those who refuse, then that wouldn't be somebody \"gone bad\", that would just be somebody \"doing right\".

That's my main point, I guess. Yes, Christianity has, and to this day still has, many who have \"gone bad\" in it's name. But the Bible doesn't condone it. The Koran does. And that's where I have the problem with it. If for no other reason, the Koran tells you to do something illegal by this country's laws that will harm others. No other religion condones it...........
