Coalition Forces Enter Baghdad
Saturday, April 05, 2003
In a move that could signal the beginning of the final and most difficult stage of Operation Iraqi Freedom, American troops entered Baghdad Saturday morning.
U.S. Central Command confirmed to Fox News that coalition troops are currently in the center of Baghdad, meeting little resistance as they charged into the capital city.
In another dramatic turn, the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry Division captured the headquarters of the Republican Guard's Medina Division. The Army's 3rd Infantry Division had met Iraqi resistance in a predominantly industrial part of the city early Saturday, Fox News has learned.
"As of this morning, coalition forces are actually in the city of Baghdad," said Navy Capt. Frank Thorp. "As we moved into the city, we saw sporatic fighting, we've actually moved through the republican guard divisions to pretty much the center of the city."
When asked about the number of troops advancing, Thorp simply stated that "We have substantial forces now moving into the city."
