Coalition Forces Enter Baghdad
Saturday, April 05, 2003

In a move that could signal the beginning of the final and most difficult stage of Operation Iraqi Freedom, American troops entered Baghdad Saturday morning.
U.S. Central Command confirmed to Fox News that coalition troops are currently in the center of Baghdad, meeting little resistance as they charged into the capital city.
In another dramatic turn, the U.S. Army 3rd Infantry Division captured the headquarters of the Republican Guard's Medina Division. The Army's 3rd Infantry Division had met Iraqi resistance in a predominantly industrial part of the city early Saturday, Fox News has learned.
"As of this morning, coalition forces are actually in the city of Baghdad," said Navy Capt. Frank Thorp. "As we moved into the city, we saw sporatic fighting, we've actually moved through the republican guard divisions to pretty much the center of the city."
When asked about the number of troops advancing, Thorp simply stated that "We have substantial forces now moving into the city."

They're in the Presidential Palace!

http://www.foxnews.com/printer_friendly_story/0,3566,83331,00.html

British troops made their deepest push into the southern city of Basra Monday, as U.S. forces made a second raid into downtown Baghdad to secure major landmarks and purge the Iraqi capital of Saddam Hussein's power.

Fox News' Greg Kelly, embedded with the Army's 3rd Infantry Division, said U.S. troops had encountered relatively light resistance moving into Baghdad, but that fighting intensified as the unit approached the downtown area.

Major Michael Birmingham, chief public affairs officer for the U.S. 3rd Infantry, told Reuters, "The other day was just an incursion. This is for real."

Fox News' Kelly said U.S. troops had seized a presidential complex inside Baghdad and that other key sites were being targeted and sealed off. The complex may be set up as a base of operations for coalition forces inside Baghdad, he added.

US Flag now flying over Saddam's presidential palace.

I also am very proud of not just the 3rd ID, but all our soldiers, sailors, marines and airmen.

They truly are the best of the best.

The colonel of the battalion was saying something to the likes of: I've been in this palace, it has golden faucets and running water, when I get a chance I'm going to take a shower in Saddam's palace
Reminds me of a quote that one of our members at WT had:

<BLOCKQUOTE id=quote><font size=1 face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" id=quote>quote:<hr height=1 noshade id=quote>You know you have lost the war when the enemy tank commander is having breakfast in your mess-hall...<hr height=1 noshade id=quote></BLOCKQUOTE id=quote></font id=quote><font face="Verdana, Arial, Helvetica" size=2 id=quote>

Or, in this case, Presidential Palace.

I saw the officer talk about the shower last night, it made me very proud. Then I had one thought. How cool it would be to be a fly on the wall listen to saddam when he heard that.

I am waiting for the infomation minister to be arrested in the middle of a news conference on international tv.

As for the 3 id dont they trace there history back to Paton at some point. What a history. Did you see the British General say how the 3 id's actions will be studied for years to come. Who knows centries from now they maybe talking about this like we talk about hanibal.

Any thoughts guys.

The 3rd ID has fought with skill, courage, and determination.

Of course, i truly believe that any of the US Army or USMC divisions would do the same in their place.

What they will be talking about in 100 years is the US Military in general, as it dominates the battlespace of the 22d century :)

There is a shopping mall in Baghdad named after Saddam's birthday -- the April 28 Mall, or 28 April Mall...something to that effect. We'll be in control of the city by then, I say we recreate Patton's famous pissing in the Rhine picture with General Frank's pissing on the 28 April Mall sign on 28 April.

Happy f&^#ing birthday, jackass.

Snipe you know as a member of the USAF I am proud of them as well as all of our coalition forces. I was just pointing out what a excellent fighting force the 3rd ID is. Just goes to show you there is no substitute for quaility training and equipment. Training most of all. I agree it would not have mattered which units were selectedt to lead the way the result would have been the same, victory and nothing less.

I know I am just a young officer candidate but I am still part of the Air Force ROTC program and yes, I did sign on the dotted line for those wondering :-) I am extremely proud of our men and women and am thankful for the help (however small it may be) from the british forces (Basra is ours thanks to their help) and to the Aussies and the fighting 200 men of portugal (LOL).... I have some close friends (PFC Brooke Steppe [Army Motor-T], and TSgt. Rob Miller [C-141/KC-135 aircraft mech.]) who are in -country... send out some prayers bros.

God Bless America

Our prayers, and thanks extend from every fighter pilot, to every trash hauler, to every grunt, to every supply clerk.

They are all doing a tremendous job...but it's not quite done yet.

Agreed... who knows how long the "occupation" could take... I would argue "as long as it takes for the iraqis to step up to the plate and organize a democratic govt." .... but thats just me :-)

The troops are close to my heart because I have 3 friends serving out there, one is on the front lines, another is on his way, and a 3rd is a KC-135/C-141 mechanic.

You're a forum monkey M21, I wrote my last post like 15 minutes ago and you already replied!!! more power to yah lol...

I hit the forums when I'm bored at work and don't have any (what my colleagoes in the "office space" environment would deem) "important" things to do.... oh and don't forget those TPS reports,,, YEEEEAAAHHH .... lol great movie... take care bro.
