Question guys I know they made equipment for loading three mavericks per station. How come it is not often used? Is it a reliability issure?

I don't think it's ever used.

Hmmm...it must've been the A-10 pilot i met last week that told me the Mav's could only be used on two stations(5 and 7?), and were rarely, if ever carried on the triple LAU launcher....hehehehe

Of course, being the dumb grunt that i am, i probably misunderstood him.

Hows about 3 and 9, and yes they were used at one time.

Mudd2Air and M21 are both right...kind of. There was a problem with the LAU-88/A pylon, primarily electrical I believe, and they were taken out of service for quite a while. Evidently, the problem has been fixed, and LAU-88A/A pylons incorporate the fix. HOWEVER, you don't see the boys in the desert carrying them, even with just two Mavericks per pylon, do you? They are heavy, about 500 pounds before you even load a missile on there, and they have a huge drag penalty. So yes, they used to use them, but don't really anymore. I wouldn't say there isn't the possibility of them EVER being used, but the circumstances would have to change significantly from the conflict we were just in to start lugging them around.

Well, I think that if ALL the A-10's get the LITEING Pod they will have to start using the Lau-88's. Or do you guys think they'll just forgo having 2 Mavs on the jet and fly with 1?

I don't think that he implied you did.

He did however state that my comment was also accurate....for the most part.I had the stations wrong.

I said they could only be carried on two stations(correct), and that the triple rail launcher was rarely, if ever used(also correct).

You said that the triple rail launcher used to be used at one time. And you were correct as well.

Don't know about now days but I damn sure did load Mav's on LAU-88's during DS-1. By the way the G model cannot be carried on the 88 and one of the first things we had to learn when loading the D's was reorient the seeker head. Careful, no more than three turns to loosen the band around the missile or you might drop a warhead. By the way the glass that covers the seeker makes a good target for rock throwing when removed, which we did on all jets during DS-1 due to the actuator pin not shattering the damn things like they should.

Hands clear. All switches off, safe or normal. Gun hot or cold? No limit, you bet.

These points are true, but the actual reason we didn't carry them in this war is because we only had 8 LAU-88 A/As in theater and we didn't have the load crews that were trained to support them. We would only have been able to support loading 2 jets a day with the -88s at a cost of not being able to reaload a jet that was cleaned off. So we went with not using the -88s. Many units did not have LAU-88s at home station and therefore were not able to train crews on them before they showed up here. Even with the extra drag and weight, we all were wanting to fly with them.

We've been saying the same thing about getting home. Looks like it might be about 6 weeks, though. What kind of paintings do you do and what info do you need. I've had some pretty interesting missions in what little time we've had to fly them.

We loaded them on some jets in when we where in Italy in OAF. I think we only flew with them maybe twice. The LAU kept screwing up, so they took them off.

If I remember correctly...they also burned holes in the flaps...Could be wrong...but I think I was told that one time while I was still in...Never saw them used while I was active Duty (94-98) @ Moody or Osan...

Yeah they didn't load the inside rack next to the wheel pod. It would burn it all the way down the pod to the flap.

FENDER IS RIGHT WE USED ALOT OF LAU-88'S IN ODS.
AND WE DIDNT LOAD THE INBOARD RAIL DO TO THE MAV'S MOTOR BURNING HOLES IN THE POD AND FLAPS.

BUT I GOT SOME INTEL A FEW DAYS AGO FROM A CREWDOG OVER THERE .HE TOLD ME THE LOAD OUT AND THEY WE'RE CARRYING 1 LAU-88 WITH 3 MAVS LOADED.SHOCKED ME! I FORWARDED THE EMAIL TO DICE TO MAKE SURE I READ IT CORRECTLY.
HE'S STILL IN THE SANDBOX BUT GETTING ME A CD WITH PIC'S ON IT AS FAST AS HE CAN.
I WANT TO SEE A OPERATIONAL A-10 WITH A REAL WORLD LAU-88 LOADED WITH 3 MAV'S. MOST OF BEEN SOME TWEEKING AND MODS TO KEEP THE FLAPS AND PODS SAFE.
I'LL TRY AND GET THEM POSTED WHEN I REC'V THEM.
