Mabe it is time to retire the A-10, do a little modernazation and roll out the A-10B, i'm sure that there are some new tecnologies that could be applied to the basic A-10 airframe. Mabe fly-buy-wire and improved avionics, I'm sure the radar cross section could be reduced.

We need something like it, but is there something that could do it better. Start with the curent hog and work from there.

no money for anything like that now, and good CAS requires armor more than stealth, but every little bit helps.

Ever hear, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it?"

It already has fly-by-wire. It's called manual reversion, and it's our way to get back home and land or behind friendly lines so we can punch out. No other Air Force aircraft in the inventory has such a system, and it no-kidding works...after you lose two hydraulic systems, by the way.

As far as the computer version like in a Lawn Dart, screw fly-by-wire. Who gives a $#!t about that when it can go tits-up in a heartbeat and leave the pilot with no other choice but to get out of the jet? I'll take redundant hydraulics with a manual reversion, thank you very much. See? If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

We've talked about this many times in here, and there is a wish-list that Hawg drivers would love to see incorporated into the jet. Dig through some previous posts, and you can see my wish-list. Who knows, with enough mods the A-10 could be made into the A-10C (The A-10B would have to be a two-seater, according to the joint aircraft designation system).

By the way, if you start reducing the RCS, you wind up with an F-16 or F-35. For CAS, I don't want either of those. I'll let a Lawn Dart or a Super Lawn Dart (F-35) do some SEAD or DEAD and I'll apply the appropriate tactics as per the threats that remain.

"We are building a concept of operations that will ensure that every one of our Air Force weapons-delivering aircraft will possess the capability to conduct close air support, and will be able to do so in the most demanding threat environments," said Maj. Gen. David A Deptula, ACC's director of Plans and Programs.

Deptula's written comments were included in a rebuttal to a New York Times column that said he had ordered an effort to justify decommissioning the aging A-10 Thunderbolt fleet as early as next year.

"There is no study to decommission the A-10 in 2004," Deptula wrote, adding, "but like all aircraft we own, they will not last forever - the average age of the A-10 is more than 23 years."

With all due respect, sir, how old is the average B-52H model?

Why try and fix something that isn't broke?

The A-10, currently scheduled to remain in service until 2028...

...The Army's ground commander criticized the Air Force's performance. Although he later retracted the remarks, they ignited a debate on the Air Force's close air support capabilities.

Thats what I asked in my very first post (no answer), I didnt think they would change the hog-up program this late in the game.

..now why would the Army Ground Commander criticize our performance?

THATS THE BIGGEST PROBLEM WE HAVE AND HAD IN THE MILITARY.
THEY NEVER WANT TO LISTEN TO THE PEOPLE WHO KNOW THE JOB!!!!!!!!!!

GIVE AIR2MUDD HIS WISH LIST,THE PILOTS KNOW BEST,BUT LEAVE THE AIRFRAME MAINTANCE TO THE WRENCH BENDERS!!!!!!!

YOU DONT HAVE TIME IN A COMBAT ENVIROMENT TO WORRING ABOUT KEEPING THE "STEATLH SKIN CLEAN!! OR WEARING BOOTIES. AND DONT EVEN THINK ABOUT LANDING A F-22 OR F-35 ON A FOL STRIP FORGET IT!

WE NEED TO BULID A NEW GENERATION CAS ATTACK JET. LET THE F-22 AND F-35 DO THE BOMBING AND CRAP FROM 15.000 FT AND GIVE GREAT PIC'S TO FOX AND CNN OF A TARGET BLOWNING UP.

BUT BULID A HEAVY ARMOUR ATTACK JET,IF WE HAVE TO GIVE IT TO THE ARMY!BUT THE GROUND POUNDERS NEED SUPPORT AND THE HELO SHOWED ITS WEAKNESS.

BUT WE DONT HAVE THE LOBBING POWER TO DO IT.

GOOSE

Maybe the USAF should come up with a Warrant Officer program for the A-10.........Get an enlisted man into a plane that has the personality of a Master Seargent......

U.S. Army would be thrilled to get the A-10, the Marines believe that only USMC Aviators provide the close air support they need, as they need it......Give the plane to the Army as a consulation to not getting the Crusader.

Why dish it off to the Army? Why not get some AF generals to wake up and we keep it like was planned? There is no reason to give it to the army when AF can do as good of if not better job using it.

I would have much rather seen them come up with a replacement for the aging 14 than build the 22 and 35. That would have saved alot more $$.
